Community Engagement Programs

We promote Japanese cultural exchange by participating in community events held in and around the city of Kelowna.

We participate in key events such as Asian Heritage Month in May and the Multi Cultural Festival held in West Kelowna in June, but we also actively participate in other smaller events.

If you are an event organizer who would like to collaborate with us, please contact us.

Nihongo Programs

We offer a program that focuses on teaching second generation Japanese children the Japanese language as their heritage language.

We also provide programs where Japanese natives can mingle with the comfort of communicating with their first language.

About us

Kelowna Japanese Language Society (KJLS) is a volunteer-based non-profit organization located in Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada.

We set our vision as
“Be the Wave to the Future:
Communicate(伝えよう)
Connect(つなごう)
Expand (広げよう )
to the future generations(みらいへ ).”

Our goals are:

  • To pass on Japanese language and culture to the next generation of children, fostering connections with their peers.
  • To build a community where Japanese is actively used and cultural bonds are strengthened across generations.
  • To offer opportunities for Kelowna and the Okanagan to learn about Japanese language and culture, fostering connections and broadening interests.
  • To contribute to the cultural diversity of the Okanagan

We wish to carry this initiative forward into the future.
